Music + the Mind is a live music experiment in neuroscience that features the Brainwave Music Project, which translates brain activity into electronic music - a project conceived by Columbia professors David Soldier and Brad Garton. Jazz drummer William Hooker will join the duo and strap on the mind-reading EEG headband to record electrical impulses coursing through the brain.
William Hooker's kinetically charged, free-time drumming style and spoken word poetry have been matched with the finest improvising talent across generations and stylistic boundaries. Composer Dave Soldier's projects include the Thai Elephant Orchestra and the Soldier String Quartet. He has performed as violinist, guitarist, and composer/ arranger with many artists including Bo Diddley and John Cale. Brad Garton is the Director of the Computer Music Center of Columbia University. He is focused on the modeling and enhancement of acoustic spaces as well as human musical performance on various virtual "instruments."
